Uncovering Ancient Wonders: Arjuna

Tree Arjuna is an important cardio-tonic plant described in the Ayurveda. It is commonly found along the river-sides of UP, Bihar, Delhi, and MP where the soil is humid and fertile. The tree has white flowers and the bark has a shining texture. It is a large, evergreen tree with numerous drooping branches, which regularly peels off its fissured bark.

Tree Arjuna has ancient significance. From Indian Epic Ramayana to the stories of Lord Krishna, the Arjuna tree has its mentions everywhere. It is said that once, while playing, Lord Krishna passed through two Arjuna trees turning them uproot, out of which two heavenly beings materialized from the trunk of the tree as they got released from the curse of sage Narada. It was a matter of wonder for villagers as to how two large trees were uprooted.

  3. Arjuna tree leaves are one of the major feeds of the tropical Tasar silkworm.
  4. The wood is used as agricultural implements and firewood.
